When a photo comes out soft, the instinct is to reach straight for the Sharpness slider. But "blurry photo" covers several causes with different prospects. The three groups below are common, but diffraction, atmospheric haze, stabilisation errors, and processing can also reduce apparent detail.
Motion blur occurs when the camera or the subject moved during the exposure. At 100% zoom you can see a directional streak — as though the scene was swept with a brush in one direction. If the camera moved, the entire frame drifts together; if only the subject moved, the background can be perfectly sharp while the figure smears along its path.
Out-of-focus blur means the plane of focus landed in the wrong place. The softness is uniform and non-directional, edges are smoothly rounded in every direction — much like bokeh. The telltale sign: somewhere else in the frame something is sharp, typically the background or an element just in front of or behind the intended subject.
Low detail from noise, strong noise reduction, a small source file, or a heavy crop looks different: texture breaks apart or becomes waxy, often without a directional trail. This is not optical blur, although it can look similar at normal viewing sizes.
Identifying which type you are dealing with is the only logical first step, because sharpening tools behave very differently in each situation. Skip this diagnosis and you can spend an hour in post and end up with a result that looks worse than the original file.
What Sharpening Actually Does — and What It Cannot
Conventional sharpening increases local contrast along edges, which the eye reads as crispness. Deconvolution and specialised motion-deblur tools instead estimate the blur pattern and try to reverse part of it. Their success depends on how well that model fits the image and how much clean signal remains.
Slight, fairly uniform blur can sometimes be reduced. But strands, letters, or textures that are not distinguishable in the source do not automatically become trustworthy. Generative tools may create plausible detail, but that is a new interpretation rather than recovered evidence.
Worse, aggressive sharpening applied to a motion-blurred or out-of-focus image introduces artifacts: halos around edges, an unpleasant "crunchy" look, amplified noise. The image becomes unnatural and even less usable than it was straight out of the camera.
Use conventional sharpening primarily to clarify detail that is already present. A specialised deblur attempt may be reasonable for motion or focus error, but judge it at the final output size and do not present generated detail as if the camera recorded it.

Inspect the file both at 100% and at its intended output size. Pixel view reveals artifacts; output view tells you whether the softness matters in practice. Neither view alone is a universal quality standard.
Ask three questions:
- Where is the blur? — Is only the subject soft, or does the whole frame drift together?
- Is there a direction? — A visible streak or vector points to motion blur; uniform, directionless softness points to focus error or noise.
- Is anything sharp in the frame? — If the background is crisp but the main subject is soft, the focal plane almost certainly landed in the wrong place.

When Editing Is Worth Attempting: A Short List
There are situations where post-processing delivers a real — if modest — improvement.
Slight overall softness caused by optics, demosaicing, or JPEG compression. Moderate sharpening can restore a sense of microcontrast. The result depends on the source, radius, masking, and output size; no setting guarantees an artifact-free result.
A noisy frame shot at high ISO. A common workflow reduces objectionable noise, then tunes detail sharpening, with output sharpening at the end. Mild directional blur in a non-critical use. Specialised deconvolution or motion deblur can sometimes improve edge readability. Compare at the target size and inspect for double contours, halos, and invented texture.

When a Reshoot Produces More Dependable Detail
Editing may improve appearance without returning the dependable detail a job requires. If the scene can be repeated, a reshoot is usually more reliable in these cases.
Heavy camera shake across the entire frame. Deconvolution may reduce part of the trail, but it cannot reliably restore fine texture when the remaining signal is weak or noisy.
Focus missed on the detail that matters most. Conventional sharpening cannot move the focal plane onto soft eyes or a missing macro detail. AI may synthesize detail, but for documentary, commercial, or scientific work that is not equivalent to an in-focus capture.

The Exception: When Blur Is the Point
Not every soft image is a mistake. A slow shutter speed that renders a waterfall or a busy street as flowing motion is deliberate. Shallow depth of field with a soft background is a compositional choice that draws the eye. Intentional defocus used for atmosphere or abstraction is its own genre.

- At high ISO, magnify an important textured area, remembering that the camera screen shows a processed preview.
- Use optical or in-body stabilisation when it suits the shooting mode; on a stable tripod, follow the camera or lens manufacturer's guidance.
- After a burst, magnify the key area in-camera, then make the final assessment on a suitable display and at the intended output size.
