Light: A Window Is a Free Modifier
Window light is a useful starting point for phone portraits because its direction is easy to see. Switching off artificial sources with a conflicting color can simplify the result. A window does not guarantee soft light, however: direct sun and a small opening can produce hard shadows.
Where your subject stands relative to the window produces three distinct results:
- Facing the window — even illumination, minimal shadows, clean read of the face. Good for a straightforward portrait, but the image feels flat.
- Partly turned towards the window — the far side of the face falls into shadow. Its softness depends on the window's apparent size, the subject's distance from it, and whether direct sun is present.
- Side-on to the window — one half of the face is lit, the other falls into shadow. This is dramatic lighting. If you wanted it, it is a technique; if you did not, it is a mistake.
Direct sun through a window can create hard shadows and clipped skin highlights. Another common complication is a lamp whose color differs visibly from the daylight, producing different casts across the face. For neutral color, try switching off the conflicting source. A practical test: try all three subject positions relative to one window and compare the frames. The difference will be visible without touching any settings.
Distance: Why Moving Closer Distorts the Face
Unfamiliar facial proportions at close range come primarily from perspective: the nose is closer to the camera than the ears, so it appears relatively larger. A wide lens does not create that perspective by itself, but it lets you move close while keeping the face in frame. That is why wide-angle portraits are associated with enlarged near features.
There is no universal portrait distance; it depends on the desired framing and character. If proportions look exaggerated, step farther back, then crop or use a longer-lens camera to preserve the subject's size in the frame.
If the phone has a dedicated telephoto camera, it can make framing from farther away easier. A 2× or 3× button does not always mean optical capture; some phones crop the main sensor, especially in low light. The increased camera distance changes perspective, not a special facial-compression property of focal length.
Important: lens profiles, Geometry, Warp, or Liquify can reduce moderate edge stretching and distortion. Portrait Mode: What It Does Well and Where It Fails
Portrait mode creates computational blur using depth estimates, subject recognition, and masks; the exact method varies by phone. It is not the same as purely optical bokeh, although a multi-camera phone may combine optical blur with computation.
Possible artifacts include blurred hair strands, gaps around ears, collars, glasses, or earrings, and an unnatural transition in sharpness across depth. Complex outlines and weak subject separation make depth estimation harder, but current phones vary considerably.
The mode generally has an easier job when the subject separates clearly from the background, light is sufficient, and the outline is readable. With a close background, low light, fine glasses, or complex hair, make a control frame without the effect and compare the edges.
Some phones retain a depth map and let you change blur strength or focus after capture; an exported JPEG may not. Small edge errors can be retouched, while heavily blurred detail can only be reconstructed approximately. For an accurate outline, reshoot without the effect or increase the physical distance between subject and background.
Background: It Competes With the Face Before You Shoot
Three background mistakes appear constantly:
- A busy or patterned background draws as much attention as the face; the eye has nowhere to settle.
- Objects appearing to grow from the head — a lamp post, a branch, a shelf edge — read as part of the silhouette.
- A horizontal line at neck level — the edge of a table, a windowsill, or the horizon — visually severs the head from the body.
These issues are easiest to solve before shooting. Increase subject-to-background distance as much as the space allows, and move the camera slightly up, down, or sideways to clear intersecting lines.
Tonal contrast matters too. A fair-skinned face against a bright white wall can simply vanish. A neutral or darker background gives the face somewhere to sit.
Cropping, local tone adjustments, and retouching can remove minor distractions. Changing the relationship between a person and a complex background without obvious reconstruction is usually easier before capture.

Editing works for:
- Gentle shadow and highlight recovery — pulling detail back from the mid-tones
- Color temperature correction — removing a warm cast or cool tint
- Cropping and horizon straightening
- Even skin tone under soft, consistent light
Editing cannot recover:
- Strong perspective from a camera position that was too close — geometry tools can soften it but cannot reproduce a different viewpoint faithfully
- Blown highlights with no recorded detail — there is nothing there to retrieve
- Strong motion blur — sharpening may improve appearance but cannot guarantee accurate detail

Heavy skin smoothing changes texture and may look unnatural. Judge the result at its intended display size and retain as much texture as the chosen style requires; there is no universal threshold.
